Tony Robbins speaks with Oprah
O: How did you keep yourself so energized after 11 hours of doing that?
R: It's just that I'm made for this, its just my passion, I'm so inside that audience feeling whats going on.
O: It ended with the firewalk, and not only did I have any intention of doing it, but I said definitely I will not be doing it. But I ended up doing it and I feel now that I can do absolutely anything.
R: It's not about firewalking, I used to do skydiving and rope experiences, anything you could imagine; its just, how do you get people to do something that really brings fear up, because that's the only thing that stops them in their lives, and how do i get them in a second from, stop my fear to moving forward.
I watched you at the fire and you grabbed your face with shock, but to your credit I watched you shift and just boom you walked across. And there was this euphoria, whenever you conquer a fear, there's euphoria, there's a freedom that comes with it.
O:I have a list of my breakthroughs. I have always known that the only reason you don't do anything is because of your fear. And I thought I was living rather fearlessly, but then when you said the only way you can live fearlessly is to be dead, I realized oh then saying that I live fearlessly is something I just tell myself. I kept my notes in this journal, yes I still keep journals and write in journals.
This was my big breakthrough: Everything is based around your story and most people are stuck because of the story they told themselves 10 years ago, 15 years ago, 20 years ago and you're still living out of that story instead of allowing your story to evolve.
R: Yeah, you can't access the answers as long as you have a story that says its impossible, or it'll never work, or I've tried everything, or I can't be that. And we all know the power of belief, it can change your biochemistry, but we don't often realize that the story might actually be true. It might be true that you were raped, it might be true that you went through hell, but that's not why you're not having what you want today. That is horrific, but that's not today. The reason you're giving becaues you're just deathly afraid of what it takes to do it today.
O:The only thing keeping me from what I want is the story that I keep telling myself about why it can't happen.
R:I think that there's an exception to every rule, but I teach strategy, you're not going to see a sunset running east.
O:This is what I loved about yesterday, that it wasn't about positive thinking
R: That's what most people think I teach. The idea that if you just think positive, everything comes to you has two bigger challenges with it. When things don't come to you, is there something wrong with you, you're not being positive enough? Also, not getting what you want is part of the plan, larger than life, because it isn't just about me. Sometimes me not getting what I want helps somebody else. Sometimes I dig myself a hole so deep, that I gotta get out of that, and now I have something to give to somebody else. Life is not about getting what you want, life is about becoming more. What you get is not going to make you happy, because success without fulfillment is failure. It's not what you get, its who you become.
O: To understand what is really going to make you happy in life, it depends on how you define being successful. The real thing everybody is looking for is meaning.
R: That's right, because success without meaning, is miserable.
O: Do you think most people are not happy with where they are?
R:I wouldn't say that, I would say most people aren't fulfilled. I don't think its about happiness, I think happiness is a temporary moment, a temporary experience, its like pleasure in the body, happiness is pleasure in the mind. Fulfillment is when somebody has a deep sense of meaning and they have a sense of purpose and I think most people unfortunately don't feel that experience consistently in their life. AT one time I didn't have everything either and I made it to these seminars, thats how I got to be here. I realized that ideas are worth everything. Rarely will an idea in your live that interupts you, you've got to pursue it, you've got to find it. I always tell people, if you want to know how to change your life, I would read biographies at the library. I would read it capture it on paper, get a plan and doing some form of massive action. And then as I was so excited to share it with other people that I would help my friends, and they would light up, I love seeing people light up, I live for that (14:30). At one time I realized that ideas were
